Love: Let It Lead The Way: April 2, 2016

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things.

I love this passage from the Bible. I read it often to ask myself the question, am I exhibiting true love at all times. It is something I could work on a little more but certainly is my intention. The importance of love is something that is taught by all the major religions in the world, yet religion is used to divide us and cause hate among us. Love is a key factor in optimal health. The 3 dimensions of optimal health (mental, physical, and spiritual) all work synergistically with each other and cannot be achieved independent of one another.   For example, researchers have shown that negative mental emotions such as hate, the opposite of love, have a negative impact on us physically. These negative emotions cause the release of a hormone called cortisol. Cortisol leads to increased inflammation in our bodies, which makes us more susceptible to disease and illness. I know that when I look at everything and everyone through the eyes of love, I am less likely to judge and have negative thoughts and feelings. Therefore, I feel better physically.

Watching the current presidential campaign makes me sad. It is a stark reminder of all the hate in the world. The name calling, division, separation from certain groups of humanity, and just pure hate exhibited by the candidates has negative implications for our society as a whole. Remember, we are all one. We all come from the same source therefore we are not only our brother’s keeper, but we are actually our brother. It does not matter if he is Muslim, Christian, Atheist, Gay, Straight, Rich or Poor. He is still our brother. He was created by the same source. We must love with no expectation of love in return. We must remember that love is kind. Are our actions and thoughts kind?

I love the lyrics from one of my favorite music artist, Hasi Basim. The lyrics are, “Let love lead the way in everything you think, do, and say.” Are we practicing love as defined in the passage above from I Corinthians? Are we letting love lead the way in everything we think, do, and say? Let’s make a commitment today to stop the thoughts of division and judgment. Stop viewing someone as separate from us because of our differences. We are not separate. Replace those thoughts with love as defined in the first paragraph. Let’s create a world that works for everyone. Let the love that’s inside of you, flow through you. Let it lead the way and you’ll never go astray.

See you next Sunday for my weekly Sunday blog.

Peace and blessings
